Lance Powell is CTO of the immersive education company VEDX.
He has researched design and user experience in multiuser VR since 2016, focusing on frameworks for understanding and combating harassment, and publishing a master’s thesis on the topic in 2018.
Lance Powell published ‘Parental Guidance for the Metaverse’ and expanded the discussion on the Voices of VR podcast in 2022.
Additionally, he taught the Virtual Worlds course in Bahcesehir University in Istanbul while presenting at several arts, education, and technology conferences both in-person and virtually.
Lance Powell is an active member of XR organizations Euromersive and XR Crowd, and he is the founder of the meetup group Parents Playing Rec Room.

Talk Description :
Abuse between players inside social networked experiences has been persistent and vexing, and the proposed steps towards moderation have introduced unintended consequences such as greater surveillance, restriction of accessibility tools, and false positive reports against players who are often the victims.
This talk will cover failed measures to curb player abuse within the Metaverse while hypothesizing on effective approaches and philosophies based in community management, education, and studies of 2D multiplayer gaming.
